For Grown-ups
charliemarley.com is a games-and-activities site for readers of The Adventures of Charlie Marley. It has no accounts, no ads and no tracking cookies. Here is everything the site collects, in plain language.
This site is made for children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information such as full names, home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers or photos.
What kids can send us
| Where on the site | What gets sent |
|---|---|
| "You're the Inventor!" form | The invention's name (up to 60 characters) and what it does (up to 240 characters). If they choose, the inventor's first name (one word, up to 20 letters). Last names are turned away. |
| "Got a better idea? Send to Emma" | A story idea (up to 80 characters). |
| Vote for the next adventure | Which sports moment they picked. One vote per device; changing the vote replaces it. |
Each form asks kids to use first names only and not to share a last name, school or address. Nothing else is asked for: no email, no age, no photo. Before anything is saved or emailed, our server checks the text. If it looks like it contains an email address, phone number, street address, web link or a full name, it is turned away and not saved, and your child sees: "Oops! Leave out names and contact info and try again."
What is stored, and where
Submissions are saved in private storage at our web host, Netlify, which the public cannot open. A copy of each invention and story idea is also kept in our Netlify account's form inbox and emailed to our private inbox, info@charliemarley.com. Each one is saved with the date and a short random code that identifies the device, not the child. To stop people from flooding the forms, the site keeps a scrambled (hashed) version of the visitor's internet address, used only to count how many times it sent something in the last minute. Like most websites, the web host also keeps standard server logs.
What stays on your child's device
Game progress (points, rank, badges, best scores, which questions were already seen, which characters they met, their vote, their Question of the Day streak, their crew quiz answers) and the name typed on the Pilot's Wings certificate are saved in the browser's local storage on that device only. They are never sent to us. The site also saves a random device code (cm-uid) so a vote can be changed instead of counted twice. Clearing the browser's site data erases all of it.
Color & Share
A grown-up enters by posting a colored page with #charliemarleycontest or emailing it to info@charliemarley.com. Kids do not send anything through this site. Each month's Artist of the Month is shown on the site with the child's first name and the picture only. We only show a picture after a parent or guardian says yes by email. Please don't include your child's face, last name or school in the photo.
Who sees submissions
Only the author, Andrew Luria, through a password-protected page and the info@charliemarley.com inbox. Story ideas are never shown to other visitors. Submissions are never sold or shared.
Midnight's Lab Wall. Andrew may pick some inventions to show on the site's Lab Wall. Nothing goes up until he approves it, one at a time. If he does, everyone can see the invention's name, what it does, and the inventor's first name if one was given. Inventions sent before the Lab Wall existed are only shown if he approves them. A parent can ask for any invention to be taken down at any time.
